Fatah, Hamas accept Egypt's settlement proposals

GAZA, October 21 (RIA Novosti) - Warring Palestinian factions, Fatah and Hamas, agreed on Tuesday to accept Egyptian mediators' proposals as a basis for the formation of a unity government.

The Al Ahram newspaper reported on Monday that Egypt had invited Palestinian political groups, including Hamas and Fatah, to Cairo on November 9 for reconciliation talks.

Egypt, which has been a long-time mediator in talks between the hostile Palestinian groups, issued invitations on Sunday for "all factions" to take part in the meeting.

Egypt has discussed the gathering with several Palestinian groups, and all of them have tentatively agreed to take part.

The faction leaders have received a draft plan outlining proposals to resolve the current political crisis, which started in June 2007 when Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip, ousting the pro-presidential Fatah movement.

The plan calls for the creation of a new unity government, which would be responsible for ending the blockade of Gaza, preparing presidential and legislative elections and restructuring of Palestinian security forces.

The draft plan also urges the Israel-Palestinian peace talks to continue to be lead by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), based on the 2005 Cairo agreement, to "conduct negotiations in adherence with national goals."
