"The agenda for the meeting will include the issue of a peace agreement, bilateral cooperation and the current situation in the world," said Akira Imamura of the Japanese Embassy in Moscow.
During his visit, which includes stops in Hokkaido and Tokyo, Sergei Lavrov will meet with his Japanese counterpart, Hirofumi Nakasone. The sides will be seeking to "reach a final decision on the territorial problem," Imamura said.
Russia and Japan have yet to sign a formal peace treaty due to their territorial dispute over the South Kuril Islands, former Japanese territory annexed by the Soviet Union after World War II.
"The visit will be in line with the agreements reached last summer at the G8 summit in Hokkaido and will be an important step in strengthening the Russian-Japanese relations," Imamura added.
The foreign ministers will also consider a possibility of holding a high-level meeting between the Japanese and Russian leaders in November at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru.
The plans by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to pay a visit to Japan later this year as part of the agreements reached at the G8 summit will be also on the agenda of the forthcoming talks.
