KABUL, November 13 (RIA Novosti) - At least seven locals and one American soldier were killed and another 80 civilians wounded in a suicide attack on a U.S. convoy in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, an Interior Ministry official said.

However, the Reuters and AP agencies said, citing a U.S. military official in the country, that 20 civilians were killed and dozens injured when a suicide bomber crashed a car packed with explosives into a U.S. armored vehicle near Jalalabad, the capital of the province of Nangarhar.

Afghanistan is facing its worst rise in violence since the U.S.-led international forces overthrew the hard-line Islamic Taliban movement in 2001.

Six people were killed and another 43 injured when an oil tanker truck was blown up in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday. The Taliban movement claimed responsibility for the attack.

U.S. president-elect Barack Obama has pledged to withdrew large numbers of troops from Iraq and deploy them to Afghanistan.
