ANKARA, November 17 (RIA Novosti) - Turkish border guards have seized 575 kg (1,268 lbs) of heroin bound for the European Union, police reported on Monday.
The drugs were seized in Turkey's westernmost province of Edirne on the border with Bulgaria. Turkish police said it was the largest ever amount of hard drugs seized on the border in a single operation.
The truck driver was arrested and a criminal case has been brought.
Turkey is a major transit route for opium-based drugs trafficked from Middle East to Europe. The majority of opiates trafficked through Turkey originate in Afghanistan.
Last year 565-kg (1,246-lb) of heroin worth $28 million was seized in the same province from a truck also carrying pizza boxes.
