U.S. destroyer to visit Georgia on November 22
16:45 21/11/2008
TBILISI, November 21 (RIA Novosti) - A U.S. warship will dock on November 22 in the Georgian Black Sea port of Batumi for a goodwill visit, the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi said on Friday.
The USS Barry (DDG-52) guided missile destroyer will be met by representatives of the local administration and public organizations. The ship will then call on another Georgian port, Poti, on November 25.
The USS Barry is the fifth American warship to visit Georgia since the end of August's five-day military conflict between the South Caucasus state and Russia over Georgia's breakaway republic of South Ossetia.
However, unlike the previous ships, the USS Barry is not delivering humanitarian aid.
The U.S. supported its ally Georgia throughout the conflict, which began when Georgian forces attacked South Ossetia on August 8.
