KIEV, November 24 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's government will hold a nationwide quiz via mobile phone text message this week on knowledge of NATO, as part of efforts to boost popular support for future membership of the Western alliance.

The quiz consists of 15 questions on the organization's history and modern global role. The winners have been promised a tour of the NATO headquarters in Brussels, Foreign Ministry spokesman Vasyl Kyrylych said on Monday.

The event was organized by the Foreign Ministry and NATO's information center in Ukraine, and is part of publicity events to garner support for the pro-Western leadership's drive to join the military alliance.

Opinion polls have found that more than 50% of Ukraine's population is opposed to the idea, and anti-NATO protests have been common in Russian-speaking areas of the country, in particular the Crimean peninsula.

NATO turned down Ukraine and Georgia's bids to join the Membership Action Plan in April, which would have paved the way for membership, but said it would consider them again in December. Kiev's chances of being admitted to the program remain unclear amid opposition from several EU states, and strong backing from the United States.

At the NATO summit in Bucharest in April, France and Germany voiced concerns that bringing Russia's neighbors into the alliance would unnecessarily provoke Moscow. Ukraine's political instability has also been cited as an obstacle to membership.
