NEW DELHI, December 2 (RIA Novosti) -- India has asked Pakistan to act against a group it says was behind the Mumbai terrorist attacks and has also requested the extradition of some 20 terrorist suspects, India's foreign minister said on Tuesday.

"We are waiting for a response from Pakistan," Pranab Mukherjee said, adding that, "the international community is behind us, including the newly-elected U.S. president Barack Obama."

The Indian ministry summoned Pakistan's High Commissioner Shahid Malik on Monday and told him that Pakistan's actions must match its January 6, 2004 pledge not to allow its territory to be used by terrorist groups for attacks against India.

The ministry told the high commissioner: "The government expects that strong action will be taken against those elements, whosoever they may be, responsible for this outrage."

New Delhi also demanded the extradition of known terrorist leaders such as Dawood Ibrahim, Maulana Masood Azhar, and Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, who are suspected of being involved in major terrorist attacks against India.

In the wake of the Mumbai attack, which left at least 183 people dead, India indicated Pakistan could have been involved.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has demanded evidence linking elements in Pakistan to the assault on Mumbai, and assured India that it would take whatever action was necessary if such proof were presented.

India has however ruled out military action against Pakistan, with whom it has fought three wars since 1947.

"No one is talking about military action," Mukherjee said.
