Israel launches diplomatic campaign to back Gaza offensive

TEL AVIV, December 22 (RIA Novosti) - The Israeli foreign minister has ordered the country's foreign embassies to start a diplomatic campaign to try and gather international support for an offensive in the Gaza Strip, local media said on Monday.

Tzipi Livni has requested that Israeli envoys at the UN file a complaint with UN Security-General Ban Ki-moon saying that Israel will "not remain idle while Qassam shells are being fired at Israeli areas adjacent to the Gaza Strip," the IMEMC news said.

Since the announcement by Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, on Friday that it considered a six-month ceasefire with Israel to be over, more than 50 rockets and mortar shells have been fired at Israel from militants in Gaza, although there are no reports of Israeli casualties.

"Israel will do whatever it can to protect its citizens," Livni said adding that she will contact her foreign counterparts, including those in the UN Security Council member states, and a number of EU countries.

Israeli officials were split over how to respond to the militant rocket fire at an Israeli cabinet meeting on Sunday.

Senior Israel Defense Forces officers told the Haaretz newspaper that the Israeli Army "has not been ordered to make any preparations for a major operation in the Gaza Strip," although the possibility of a future offensive has not been ruled out.
