MADRID, January 20 (RIA Novosti) - Two military jets crashed in eastern Spain on Tuesday killing their three air force pilots, a Spanish news agency reported.

"This morning a radar contact was lost with two Mirage F1 jets from the Albacete military base, which were carrying out routine training flights," the EFE news agency said quoting the Defense Ministry.

The military launched a search at around 09:15 GMT and about half an hour later found the wreckage of the two jets, about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) apart, as well as the bodies of the three pilots, the ministry said in a statement.

It is not yet known what caused the accident, but bad weather could have been a factor as there was heavy fog in the crash area on Tuesday morning.

Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacon flew to Albacete to inspect the crash site and meet with relatives of the dead pilots.

Spain received 42 Mirage F1CE, 24 Mirage F1EE and 6 Mirage F1BE (two-seater) from France between 1975 and 1983. Spanish military sources say the outdated Mirage fighters were recently modernized.
