NEW DELHI, February 19 (RIA Novosti) - A ferry collided with a cargo boat in southern Bangladesh on Thursday, killing at least one person with another 50 passengers still unaccounted for, national media said.

The incident occurred on the Kirtankhola River, some 120 km (75 miles) from the country's capital of Dhaka. It was initially reported that some 100 passengers could have drowned, but the figure of 50 missing was later confirmed by local police.

Rescuers have so far recovered the body of a woman. A number of passengers are known to have swum ashore to safety.

Ferries in Bangladesh, one of the world's most densely populated countries, often sail overloaded and are frequently involved in fatal accidents. In late January, 25 people died in a similar ferry incident on the Meghna River.
