TEL-AVIV, March 6 (RIA Novosti) - The Israeli Air Force has bombed five smuggling tunnels in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket attacks by Palestinian militants, the Israeli army press service said on Friday.

The strikes on Thursday evening followed the Air Force's bombings of nine other tunnels near the Egyptian border on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Palestinian militants have launched eight rockets into Israel over the past 24 hours. On Thursday morning Israeli warplanes attacked a group of Palestinian militants, killing three of them.

The cross-border violence has continued as the sides continue to negotiate the terms of a long-term truce deal. Hamas is demanding that Israel lift its economic blockade of the coastal enclave, while Israel is seeking the return of its captured soldier Gilad Shalit.

A total of 140 rockets have been launched into Israeli territory since Israel concluded its devastating attack on Gaza, which left about 1,300 Palestinians dead, on January 18.
