"As the [current] president was elected in July 2005 ahead of schedule, his term expires this October," Svetlana Sadykova, who chairs the court, told reporters adding the date was to be set by parliament.
Kurmanbek Bakiyev came to power on the back of mass protests in Bishkek that toppled the ex-Soviet republic's long-serving leader Askar Akayev, who fled the country.
The ruling was made after a member of a minor opposition Social Democratic Party raised the issue. Bakiyev was elected for a four-year term, but the constitution has since been amended to extend the term for one year. Bakiyev plans to run again.
The impoverished state has been plagued by instability, with the opposition accusing Bakiyev of helping his party win the majority of seats in parliament in the 2007 poll.
