CAIRO, March 31 (RIA Novosti) - At least 12 people were killed and another 39 injured when a bus overturned in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Tuesday, the MENA news agency reported.

The bus, which was taking Egyptian workers to the port of Nuweiba, crashed some 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Nekhil, in the south of the peninsula.

Preliminary reports said the accident occurred when the driver lost control of his vehicle on a hazardous stretch of road. A number of the injured are in a critical condition.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

Road accidents are frequent in Egypt, largely due to reckless driving and poor roads. According to the Egyptian Interior Ministry, about 27,000 road accidents occur in the North African country every year, killing over 6,000 people and injuring another 30,000.
