TEHRAN, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - Iran is considering exporting gas to Europe via Iraq, Syria and the Mediterranean Sea, the petroleum minister of the Islamic republic said on Wednesday.

"In accordance with a project being developed, Iranian gas will be supplied to European countries via Iraq, Syria and the Mediterranean Sea and further onto Greece and Italy," Gholam-Hossein Nozari said during a visit to Damascus.

Tehran has selected the "Persian Pipeline" project as a potential route to export gas to Europe amid efforts by the European Union to find alternative energy sources.

"We hope the project will be implemented with Syria's assistance," Iranian TV quoted Nozari as saying.

The Iranian minister said Tehran was currently negotiating the project with its European partners and added that a trilateral agreement between Iran, Syria and Iraq would be needed to implement the project.
