NEW DELHI, April 6 (RIA Novosti) - An explosion killed six people and injured 30 on Monday in Guwahati, the largest city in the northeast Indian state of Assam, a police official said.

Media reports earlier said four people were killed and 14 injured when a bomb, planted on a motorcycle, went off in a busy shopping area.

The blast occurred a day before Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's planned visit to the troubled region. Police suspect the attack was carried out by a local separatist militant group, the United Liberation Front of Assam.

The blast is the second to hit Guwahati in the last seven days. One person was killed and 15 injured in a bomb attack in the city on March 31.

In a separate development on Monday, six people were injured in an explosion in Dhekiajuli, a city some 150 km (93 miles) from Guwahati.
