Ukraine to extradite Chisinau riot suspects to Moldova

18:16 15/04/2009
KIEV, April 15 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine is to extradite two Moldovan nationals suspected of organizing last week's disturbances in Chisinau, a Ukrainian Prosecutor General's office spokesman said Wednesday.

"The decision on extradition has been made," Yuriy Boychenko said.

The two men, Gabriel Stati and Auren Marinesku, were detained by Ukrainian authorities on April 8 in Odessa airport. Ukrainian media say Stati is a successful Moldovan businessman.

Protests against the results of the April 5 parliamentary polls turned violent last week, when some 10,000 rioters, mainly students, broke into the presidential residence and parliament. Several hundred protesters and police were injured in the violence.

President Vladimir Voronin's Communist Party won almost 50% in the polls. Voronin is due to step down on May 7, but his party won just enough seats in the parliament to be able to elect a successor without requiring votes from any other party.

Voronin urged a full recount on Saturday "to find a way out of the political deadlock, and restore an atmosphere of stability and trust in the newly elected parliament." The country's top election official said on Wednesday that Moldova had started the recount.
