Hamas threatens to kidnap Israeli soldiers to ease prisoner swap

DAMASCUS, April 21 (RIA Novosti) - The Hamas movement is threatening to abduct more Israeli soldiers to exchange them for Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails, a Syria-based Hamas leader told journalists on Tuesday.

"If one soldier is not enough to strike a deal on a prisoner swap, we will abduct new [Israeli] soldiers to ensure the exchange," Ali Baraka said at a press conference.

Hamas is demanding the release of at least 450 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Gilad Shalit, a 22-year-old Israeli conscript seized by Gaza militants in a cross-border raid in June 2006.

There are more than 11,000 Palestinian prisoners reportedly being held in Israeli jails.

"Shalit will not see the light of day until Palestinian prisoners have been released," Baraka said.

Former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert intensified efforts to secure the release of Shalit before his term in office ended. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently re-examining the Shalit case.
