The World Health Organization on Friday confirmed 7,520 cases of swine flu in 34 countries, with 65 deaths, over a thousand more infections than yesterday.

MOSCOW, May 15 (RIA Novosti) - The World Health Organization on Friday confirmed 7,520 cases of swine flu in 34 countries, with 65 deaths, over a thousand more infections than yesterday.

Sixty people have died in Mexico, which has reported 2,446 laboratory confirmed human cases of swine flu. The United States has reported 4,298 confirmed cases with three fatalities. One person died in Canada, which has reported 449 cases, and Costa Rica has had one fatality and eight confirmed cases.

Despite the dramatic media reports that accompanied the recent outbreak of H1N1 or swine flu, leading scientists say the virus is a mild strain and only a further mutation would make it a serious threat. Swine flu deaths in Mexico, the worst hit by the virus, are around average for seasonal flu fatalities.

The WHO has said there is no risk of infection from the consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products.

Gennady Onishchenko, the head of Russia's consumer rights regulator Rospotrebnadzor, said Friday that H1N1 is not yet a pandemic strain. "It is still weak," he said.
