TBILISI, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - Opposition activists in Georgia who blocked a rail line in Tbilisi last night demanding the president's resignation ended their picket on Wednesday.

Eka Beselia of the Movement for United Georgia told a rally outside parliament on Tuesday that blocking the line was a warning ahead of "the most radical acts."

The decision to cancel the picket was announced to reporters by David Gamkrelidze, leader of the New Rights party, who explained: "News has come that a rally on Rustaveli Prospekt is planned to be dispersed, so we have to strengthen our positions there."

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Georgia's opposition called on the international community to help resolve the situation in the country, and end the stalemate, with protests now in their seventh week.

A total of 14 leading opposition parties and groups first took to the streets of Tbilisi on April 9, urging President Mikheil Saakashvili to step down over his failure to carry out democratic reforms and over last August's disastrous war with Russia.
