CAIRO, May 29 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Embassy in Cairo is attempting to meet with 34 Russian students detained by Egyptian authorities, Russian Vice-Consul Yusup Abakarov told RIA Novosti on Friday.
The students were detained in the early hours of Wednesday and the Russian Embassy has sent a formal request to police authorities for an explanation, but has not yet received any official answer.
"So far we have not been given any access to [the students] in order to meet with them to protect their rights and to find out what the situation is," Abakarov said.
"We do not have any official information on this case, although we have sent queries to the foreign ministry and other government agencies. However we still do not have a list of those detained or the charges [brought against them]," he said.
