TBILISI, June 21 (RIA Novosti) - A roadside explosion hit a vehicle carrying medics working for the EU observer mission in Georgia on Sunday morning, killing the driver and severely wounding a doctor, the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

The car set off an anti-tank mine in the village of Muzhava in the Tsalenjikh district of western Georgia, near the border with Abkhazia, at 10:30 local time (05:30 GMT). Georgian authorities said they are investigating the incident.

A spokesman for the EU mission in Georgia confirmed the report. The mission conducts regular patrols of the area under a ceasefire deal brokered by the EU to end the five-day war between Russia and Georgia last August.

The driver of the vehicle, Tenzig Akhaladze, died in hospital in the town of Zugdidi. One of the doctors, Gega Patiashvili, was severely injured, and is being treated in the same hospital. Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Zurab Gvenetadze said his injuries are not fatal.

None of the EU observers who were travelling in an accompanying vehicle were injured, and their vehicle was only slightly damaged by the blast. Georgia's Rustavi 2 TV said there were two explosions in quick succession.
