NEW DELHI, July 8 (RIA Novosti) - At least 16 people were killed and over 25 injured in a fire that broke out at a fireworks workshop near the city of Madurai in southern India's Tamil Nadu state, the Times of India reported on Wednesday.
The daily said eight people died at the scene after some fire crackers exploded late on Tuesday, setting off the fire, while others died of severe burns either on their way to or in hospitals.
Eight fire teams took more than four hours to put out the blaze, with their efforts hindered by the lack of water in the area.
Among the dead are the owner of the workshop, his wife, and several children, who worked in the factory after school. Some 80 people were reported to be near or inside the workshop at the time of the incident.
