KIEV, July 12 (RIA Novosti) - Rescuers are evacuating almost 400 workers from a coal mine in southeast Ukraine where a fire has broken out, the UNIAN news agency said on Sunday.
The fire at the Sukhodolskaya-Vostochnaya mine in the Lugansk Region occurred at 11:18 local time (08:18 GMT) on the mine's surface. All 399 miners underground were told to evacuate the mine. Rescue teams were promptly sent to the site, UNIAN said.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. Firefighters are still working at the scene.
Ukrainian mines have a poor safety record due to the use of obsolete equipment, as well as widespread safety violations.
