Russia and Nicaragua are to introduce visa-free travel for their citizens under an agreement signed during Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin's visit to the Central American country.

MANAGUA, July 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Nicaragua are to introduce visa-free travel for their citizens under an agreement signed during Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin's visit to the Central American country.

The deal was signed on Tuesday, along with a memorandum of understanding between Nicaragua's Petronic and a consortium of Russian oil companies on cooperation on oil and energy projects.

There are believed to be good prospects for oil exploration and extraction in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans off the Central American country.

Additionally, an agreement on fishing between the Russian Federal Fishing Agency and the Fisheries Ministry of Nicaragua was initialed, paving the way for cooperation in catching and processing fish and other seafood.

Sechin was accompanied by Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko and Russian fisheries chief Andrei Krainy.

This is the deputy prime minister's third visit to Nicaragua in the past 12 months. Bilateral ties got a boost last year when Nicaragua became the only country to join Russia in recognizing the independence of the former Georgian republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
