MOSCOW, August 12 (RIA Novosti) - The number of people injured following a powerful earthquake, which struck the Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan Tuesday, has risen to 116 with one person dead, Japanese media reported on Wednesday.

Earlier Kyodo reported that 87 people had been injured.

Japanese newspaper Asahi also said that the 6.5-magnitude quake had damaged a section of the Tomei Expressway which has been closed for repair work.

Two nuclear reactors at the Hamaoka plant automatically suspended work after the quake struck early Tuesday morning, said a Chubu Electric representative.

A Chubu Electric official was cited by Kyodo as saying, "As the reactors were suspended as designed, we see no problems in their quake resistance."

The tremor also caused damage to the highway linking Tokyo with Nagoya. Shinkansen bullet train services were also halted for two hours and some local services in Tokyo and Shizuoka were suspended.

Japan Meteorological Agency officials said that it was the first quake of such magnitude to jolt the prefecture since 1944.

Another earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck on Sunday night, also off the Pacific coast of Japan at a depth of 340 kilometers (211 miles), causing widespread tremors but little damage.

Japan experiences a tremor every five minutes and around 20% of all earthquakes in the world measuring 6 on the Richter scale or higher hit the Southeast Asian country.

The Japanese government enforced even stricter building regulations and emergency procedures after a magnitude 7.2 quake hit the western port city of Kobe in 1995 killing over 6,400 people.
