KABUL, August 12 (RIA Novosti) - A police chief and two police officers were killed when Taliban militants attacked a district police headquarters in the country's northern Kunduz Province, an afghan police spokesman said on Wednesday.

The attack on the relatively peaceful Dasht-e-Archi district occurred prior to the impoverished country's August 20 presidential and local elections that the Taliban has vowed to disrupt.

The dead police chief is the brother of the province's governor, a spokesman said, adding that three other officers had been injured in the attack.

Violence across Afghanistan is currently at its highest level since the Taliban were removed from power by U.S.-led forces in 2001.
