MOSCOW, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - The death toll after a powerful earthquake struck Indonesia has risen to 57 with hundreds of others injured, local media reported on Thursday.
The quake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck Wednesday afternoon, causing damage to around 25,000 homes and buildings across West Java with five regions left without electricity. Indonesia media said at least 110 people were injured with 10 reported to be in a critical condition.
RIA Novosti's correspondent in Jakarta said that the quake was felt as far away as the capital where a number of buildings were evacuated. The Health Ministry said at least 27 people had been injured in Jakarta.
Around 10 people were killed when their village in the Cianjur district, Central Java, was engulfed in a mudslide. Rescuers are continuing to search for survivors among the debris.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited the most badly-hit area of West Java on Thursday and pledged funds to help those affected by the earthquake.
Each year, close to 7,000 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or higher are registered in Indonesia.
