ATHENS, September 13 (RIA Novosti) - The Greek opposition Party PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) supports the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline project, the party leader said Sunday.

Burgas-Alexandroupolis is a project between Russia, Greece and Bulgaria to pump Russian and Caspian oil from the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Burgas to the Greek Aegean port of Alexandroupolis. The three countries signed an agreement to build the 280-km Trans-Balkan pipeline in 2007 following several years of talks.

"We were the government that started the Burgas-Alexandroupolis project, and, judging by the situation, we will be the government that will complete this project," George Papandreou told journalists in Thessaloniki.

Opinion polls say PASOK, to which President Karolos Papoulias belongs, is leading three weeks prior to the parliamentary election, leaving the ruling New Democracy Party led by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis slightly behind.

Karamanlis earlier said he would ask Papoulias to dissolve parliament because dealing with the complex situation in the country and the consequences of the global financial crisis required tough decisions. On September 7, Papoulias dismissed the country's parliament and set early elections for October 4.

Greece currently has one of the biggest public debts in the euro zone, amounting to nearly 100% of its GDP.
