Spanish police have detained a pilot suspected of involvement in the state-sanctioned murder of dissidents during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship in Argentina.

VALENCIA, September 23 (RIA Novosti) - Spanish police have detained a pilot suspected of involvement in the state-sanctioned murder of dissidents during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship in Argentina.

Argentine national Julio Alberto Poch, who has Argentine and Dutch citizenship and is a pilot for the Dutch airline company Transavia, was detained at Valencia Airport by request of Buenos Aires.

Poch is suspected of taking part in so-called death flights carried out by the military dictatorship, when over 1,000 people were thrown out of planes over the Atlantic Ocean.

Human rights organizations claim some 30,000 people disappeared during Argentina's "dirty war." Official figures say some 11,000 went missing.
