NEW YORK, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that dominance of several states in global affairs was "unacceptable," and called for the veto right of permanent members of the UN Security Council to be revoked.
"It is unacceptable that the UN and Security Council, which should represent the opinion of all nations and governments by democratic means, are dominated by several governments and serve their interests," he said at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly.
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi voiced a similar proposal earlier on Wednesday.
The UN Security Council imposed a set of economic sanctions against Iran in 2006 over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment. Several Western powers recently warned that more sanctions against the Islamic republic might follow.
Delegations from the United States, Israel and EU members left the hall as the Iranian leader accused Israel of a “barbaric attack” on the Palestinian territories.
“Aggressors and those who support them continue their human rights rhetoric to put pressure on others,” Ahmadinejad said.
“It is no longer acceptable for a small minority to dominate politics, the economy and culture in vast parts of the world through its complicated networks, and establish a new form of slavery, and damage other nations’ reputations...to attain its racist ambitions,” he added.
