Venezuelan prosecutor's office has requested Interpol to issue a red corner notice (RCN) for the country's former president Carlos Andres Perez

MOSCOW, October 1 (RIA Novosti) - Venezuelan prosecutor's office has requested Interpol to issue a red corner notice (RCN) for the country's former president Carlos Andres Perez, the Universal paper said on Thursday.

The country's Prosecutor General Luisa Ortega Diaz said the ex-president's capture was necessary as part of an investigation into the 1989 violent crackdown on protestors in the capital Caracas, which left at least 300 people dead.

"The situation cannot be resolved via the diplomatic channels as the question of extradition is still being considered. Officially, he is not even a suspect," the paper quoted Diaz as saying.

A red notice is not an international arrest warrant, and is issued to indicate that a person is wanted by national jurisdictions or, in some cases, by international courts. After issuing such a warrant, Interpol is to assist the national police forces in identifying or locating those persons with a view to their arrest and extradition.

According to an Associated Press report, 85-year-old Perez currently lives in Miami. Diaz said, however, that his current location is unknown.

On the 20th anniversary of the tragedy Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez urged the country's judicial authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
