MOSCOW, October 1 (RIA Novosti) - Iran's chief nuclear negotiator called on Thursday for global nuclear disarmament at a meeting with six world powers in Switzerland.
Saeed Jalili met outside Geneva with officials from the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany to discuss international concerns over Iran's nuclear power program.
Iran's National Security Council released a statement in the afternoon saying the discussions were progressing in a "calm atmosphere."
State English-language channel Press TV said Jalili "reiterated the need for a global nuclear disarmament, a long-standing Iranian demand."
The meeting of the 'Iran Six' negotiating countries comes days after news of a second Iranian uranium enrichment site led to calls for harsher sanctions against Tehran. The U.S. and Britain have also refused to rule out military action if Iran refuses to freeze its uranium enrichment program.
Western media said Jalili held direct talks on Friday with a U.S. official, the highest-level discussions between the countries in several decades. Iran has not confirmed the report.
Western powers suspect Iran of attempting to build nuclear weapons, but Tehran says its nuclear program is aimed at generating nuclear energy for civilian purposes.
The talks in Genthod, by Lake Geneva, will continue on Friday.
Iran has agreed with the Iran Six to hold another round of talks by the end of October.
