South India's Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh states saw the worst floods in the past 60 years following days of torrential rains. The Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported 178 deaths in Karnataka and 37 in neighboring Andhra Pradesh.
Some 1 million people were made homeless in the hardest hit northeast areas of Karnataka.
The PTI said at least 25 people were killed in floods in western Maharashtra state.
Indian authorities have estimated damage from the downpours at some $250 million.
