WASHINGTON, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - The United States has praised the implementation of an agreement with Russia on military transit to Afghanistan and intends to continue flights, the State Department said Thursday.
Moscow and Washington signed the deal on military transit via Russian territory, both overland and by air, on July 6 during President Barack Obama's visit to Russia.
"The United States welcomes the inaugural flight of material transiting Russia en route to Afghanistan to support ISAF operations," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said in a statement.
"Russia's agreement to allow the United States to transit lethal equipment across its territory in support of ISAF operations is an important contribution to our efforts to improve security and stability in Afghanistan. We look forward to many more flights under this agreement," the statement said.
