At least 47 people died on Friday when a ferry sank in a river in northeast Bangladesh's Kishoreganj district, local officials reported.
The ferry, with some 80 people on board, collided head-on with another vessel and capsized. The accident occurred about 117 kilometers northeast of the country's capital, Dhaka.
A rescue operation is underway, with dozens of people still missing. Officials were quoted by media reports as saying the death toll is likely to rise.
The sinking is the second such incident in Bangladesh in a week. Last Friday, an overcrowded ferry capsized in the country's southern Bhola district, killing at least 85 people.
According to Bangladesh's inland water transport authorities, about 1,000 people die in ferry accidents every year in the country. Overcrowding and poor navigation are main causes.
