The Turkish ambassador to the United States has resigned soon after an official visit to Washington by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, national media said on Thursday.

Erdogan met with U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington on Monday.

Turkish television NTV said Nabi Sensoy had allegedly failed to submit to Washington Ankara's request to expand the format of the Obama-Erdogan talks so that the Turkish foreign minister and the U.S. secretary of state were also present.

The TV channel also said the ambassador could have been angered by the fact that Erdogan's visit had been prepared by advisors to the Turkish PM, not embassy officials.

According to Taiwan News, the Turkish Foreign Ministry reported Sensoy's resignation on Tuesday without explaining why he had quit.

Sensoy, who was appointed in January 2006, was scheduled to remain in his post through the first quarter of 2010.
