A pear-shaped diamond went under hammer for more than $5.4 million at Christie's in New York, the famous auction house said on its website on Friday.

The flawless 39-karat diamond was sold slightly below its highest estimate of $5.5 million.

The gem comes from India's famed Golconda mines, the source of world's most famous diamonds, including the Koh-i-Noor diamond from the British Crown Jewels, the deep-blue Hope diamond and the world's most expensive diamond ever sold at the auction, The Wittelsbach Diamond.

In early December, Christie's sold a rare pink diamond, Vivid Pink, for $10.8 million.
