The Copenhagen police have released almost all protesters detained during a mass climate change rally in the Danish capital, the BBC reported on Sunday.
Overall, the police detained 968 demonstrators after youths threw bricks and smashed windows as over 30,000 people took to the streets of Copenhagen on Saturday to demand action to cope with climate change from the participants of a UN climate conference underway in the Danish capital, the BBC reported.
A police spokesman said that five out of 968 that were earlier arrested would be charged and appear in court.
The 15th UN climate change conference, a result of two-year international talks on a binding treaty to cut global carbon emission, began in Copenhagen on Monday. The conference, which puts together about 15,000 participants from 192 countries, will run until December 18. It has so far failed to produce a plan to fight global warming.
On Friday, 68 protestors who chanted "Our climate is not your business" were detained in the city.
The Kyoto Protocol, a legally binding agreement restricting carbon emissions, expires in 2012. A new deal is needed to continue efforts beyond 2012.
A new binding treaty to cut global greenhouse emission is widely expected to be agreed during the talks in the Danish capital.
However, some observers say the summit is more likely to just outline principles and directions for a post-Kyoto framework.
