Drug violence claims 13 lives in Mexico's Acapulco

Five police officers were reportedly killed
03:36 14/03/2010

Thirteen people have been killed in the Mexican resort city of Acapulco, where drug-related violence has surged of late, local media have said.

Five police officers were reportedly killed and another one was wounded when unknown gunmen attacked a police car on Saturday.

Media reports said eight other people were killed in the city earlier on Saturday. Two of them were reportedly beheaded.

Police officials were quoted as saying the dead had fallen victims to turf-wars of local criminal groups.

Media reports said the Saturday violence was the deadliest in Acapulco in recent years.

Crime is among the most urgent concerns facing Mexico, with drag trafficking being the country's major woe. Hundreds of people are being killed annually by drug mafia in the Latin American state.

Acapulco, a major Mexican tourist resort some 300 kilometers (190 miles) southwest from the country's capital, has seen bloody infighting between rival drug cartels of late.

In early February, 13 youngsters were killed and 20 were wounded in Mexico's northern city of Ciudad Juarez when a group of gunmen, believed to be members of a local drug cartel, entered a house where a party was underway and opened fire. Media reports said the attack was an act of revenge.

In his New Year's speech, Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared fighting drug crimes in Mexico the government's top priority for 2010.
