A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck the Bering Sea halfway between Alaska and Russia but no tsunami advisory for the surrounding coastlines has been issued so far, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Saturday.
According to USGS, the quake occurred at 23.11 GMT on Friday 474 km (294 miles) from Gambell, Alaska, and 478 km (297 miles) from Provideniya, Russia at a depth of about 15 kilometers (9.4 miles).
However, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement that a tsunami was not expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast.
"No tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas," the statement said.
Russian seismological services have confirmed a 6.3 magnitude quake in the Bering Sea 450 kilometers from Anadyr on Russia's Chukotka Peninsula at a depth of 15 kilometers, but also said no tsunami was expected in the wake of the tremor.
