Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced of a 15% increase in salaries of all Venezuelans on the occasion of the International Labor Day.
The increase in wages was earlier scheduled for September 1. The minimum salary in Venezuela is currently estimated at some $300 per month.
Chavez also said that salaries of all medical personnel working in government-sponsored establishments would be raised by 40%.
"The decision on the salaries increase was dictated by government's anxiety about raising living standards for all people," local media quoted Chavez as saying.
