The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has approved a U.S. proposal for indirect negotiations with Israel, sources in Ramallah said on Saturday.
In the indirect negotiations, which have been dubbed "proximity talks," U.S. special envoy George Mitchell will convey messages between the two sides. The process is intended to lead to direct peace talks.
On Friday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with George Mitchell in Ramallah to discuss the efforts to jumpstart the indirect peace talks, Ynet.news reported.
Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said that within the next two days the Americans would respond to the Palestinian demand that Washington guarantee Israel's commitment to the process, particularly with regards to settlement construction.
Erekat said that Abbas and Mitchell are expected to hold additional talks on Saturday and Sunday.
