Leader of Poland's Law and Justice party Jaroslaw Kaczynski said he feels grateful to Russians for their sympathies expressed after the tragic death of his twin brother, Polish President Lech Kaczynski, in Russia last month.

"A major tragedy took place on April 10. Polish people noticed an outburst of compassion and sympathies expressed by millions of Russians. They noticed it and appreciated. Thank you for each shed tear, each lit candle, each word of sympathy. There are moments in the history, which can change everything and even the course of the history. I hope that such moment is approaching," he said in a video address posted on the Internet.

Relations between Moscow and Warsaw, which have been hampered by historic past events, seem to have improved after Russia showed true compassion following the crash near Smolensk that killed President Lech Kaczynski and dozens of Polish top officials.

Soon after the April 10 plane crash, Russia announced a day of mourning and hundreds of Muscovites came to the Polish embassy to express their condolences to the Polish people.

The president was on his way to a ceremony to pay tribute to the some 20,000 Polish officers killed by Soviet secret police during World War Two in Katyn and other locations across the U.S.S.R.
