Leaders of Kyrgyz political parties called for parliamentary elections in October during a meeting with Kyrgyz Deputy Prime Minister Omurbek Tekebayev on Wednesday.

Kyrgyzstan held a referendum on a new Constitutionon Sunday.

The majority of voters approved changes to the constitution that reduce the president's powers and make Kyrgyzstan a parliamentary republic. Voters also endorsed interim leader Roza Otunbayeva as president for the transitional period until December 31, 2011.

"The political system in the country has changed dramatically after the referendum. From now on, a parliamentary form of government exists in Kyrgyzstan, and this raises many questions for representatives of political parties," Tkebayev said.

The adopted constitution stipulates that almost the full state power is transferred to the parliament. The 120-seat parliament will appoint a prime minister and a government. The president will have a largely ceremonial role and will be elected for one six-year term.
