Kyrgyzstan on Thursday announced it has lifted the police checkpoints surrounding its capital Bishkek after the stabilization of the social and political situation in the Central Asian country.

Interethnic clashes in the country's south broke out on June 11 and claimed the lives of more than 280 people, according to government figures, and made thousand homeless. However, Kyrgyz officials acknowledge that the real death toll may be 10 times higher.

"Fourteen [police] checkpoints that had been put up on June 15 due to the clashes were lifted in relation with the stabilization of the situation in the republic," a spokeswoman for the Bishkek city government said.

"All the capital's policemen have been transferred to normal duty," she added.
