Canadian Air Force fighters intercepted two Russian strategic bombers over the Atlantic Ocean, CBC television reported, citing Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay.
Canadian F-18 pilots took to the air from the Bagotville Air Force Base in Quebec after identifying two Russsian Tu-95 Bears in the country's buffer zone on Wednesday. The Russian aircraft were 450 kilometers off the coast of Labrador.
Russia resumed strategic bomber patrol flights over the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans in August 2007, following an order from then-President Vladimir Putin.
The patrols are regularly performed by Tu-95 Bear and Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bombers, and by Tu-22M3 Backfire long-range bombers.
All flights by Russian aircraft are performed in strict compliance with international law on the use of airspace over neutral waters, without intruding the airspace of other states.

It is nice to see the Canadian air force at work and actively protecting Canadian borders from unwanted aggressors. Not that Russia is an unwanted aggressor in anyway shape or form.
The Canadain government is in the process of approving funds for the purchase of $35 billion dollars worth of new F35 fighters. the next 5th generation jet fighter from Lockheed Martin.
I am sure that the Canadian Government (Stephen Harper) has asked Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for a little bit of help to get Canadians on board to approve the funds. So nothing like having a pair of Russian bombers fly by on their way to Cuba or Venezula.
Personally I would love to see the Canadian Government purchase the new Russian MIG jet fighter. That is a really nice looking machine. With new Russian MIG jet fighters for Canadian air defences we would worry less about the Russian bombers flying by.
On a more serious note though, this summer I had the opportunity to visit the war memorial in Volgograd and it made a profund impression on me.
It was extrememly emotion to learn of the 1 million or more young Russian men and women who sacraficed their lives to stop the NAZI invasion that would have changed Russia forever.
The NAZI's were almost able to defeat the Russian's with superior military tactics and weapons. Only shear force of will and sacrafice on the part of these young Russians saved their country.
The World War II battle at Volgograd should me why it is so important for countries to keep their military weapons and tactics up to date and to always be vigilant of an aggressor.
Countries that falter will be taken over by other countries. This has happened throughout history.
If you are in Russia and in the Volgograd region I cannot urge you enough to go and see both the war memorial and the war museum. The war memorial is easy to locate having a magnificent statue of "Mother Russia" at the top holding a sword.
Beneath the statue of "Mother Russia" are the graves of the 1 million Russian soldiers (men and women) who died to keep Russia free from NAZI occupation and rule.
It is impossible not to be profoundly affected by this sacrafice and why countries today are so vigilant when it comes to monitoring their borders. - arnoldvinette@yahoo.comLetter sent to Ottawa Citizen and CPM Stephen Harper21:14, 31/07/2010Arnold Vinette

This is a comment written to the web site www.rianovosti.ru when it covered the Canadian F-18 fighter response to the Russian bomber flyby. A flight that is routine, conducted 14-18 times a year, and that Canadian military officials are routinely briefed on (this flight included).

The Ottawa Citizen did a good story on this today Saturday July 31, 2010 in the front section of today's paper. What is ironic is that my comments were written before I read the citizen article which agreed with my feedback to RIA Novosti.

It is nice to see the Canadian air force at work and actively protecting Canadian borders from unwanted aggressors. Not that Russia is an unwanted aggressor in anyway shape or form.
The Canadian government is in the process of approving funds for the purchase of $16 billion dollars worth of 65 new F-35 fighters. The next 5th generation jet fighter from Lockheed Martin.
I am sure that the Canadian Government (Stephen Harper) has asked Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for a little bit of help to get Canadians on board to approve the funds. So nothing like having a pair of Russian bombers fly by on their way to Cuba or Venezuela.

It was extremely emotional to learn of the 1 million or more young Russian men and women who sacrificed their lives to stop the Nazi invasion that would have changed Russia forever.
The Nazi’s were almost able to defeat the Russian's with superior military tactics and weapons. Only shear force of will and sacrifice on the part of these young Russians saved their country.
The World War II battle at Volgograd showed me why it is so important for countries to keep their military weapons and tactics up to date and to always be vigilant of an aggressor.

If you are in Russia and in the Volgograd region I cannot urge you enough to go and see both the war memorial and the war museum. The war memorial is easy to locate having a magnificent statue of "Mother Russia" at the top of the old battle field holding an outstretched sword.
Beneath the statue of "Mother Russia" are the graves of the 1 million Russian soldiers (men and women) who died to keep Russia free from Nazi occupation and rule.
The Volgograd war museum shows you in vivid detail just how much destruction this Russian city endured as Russian soldiers fought valiantly and finally won their two year World War II battle against the Nazi regime.
Although the city of Volgograd was completely destroyed during the battle, the country of Russia was saved from invasion and occupation. The city of Volgograd would later be rebuilt better than ever and the sacrifice of the 1 million Russian soldiers would never be forgotten.
It is impossible not to be profoundly affected by this sacrifice and why countries today are so vigilant when it comes to monitoring their borders.

Further information
Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are great friends. Over the last two years I have completed four “Presidential Kids Art Album eBooks” for President Barack Obama on behalf of the Canadians and the Russians. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his administration have received copies of each release.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Canadian Government are now considering sponsoring an $87.7 to $100 million dollar art-playground project in Russia that I have proposed. Five hundred Russian schools would be involved drawing, coloring and painting 100,000 pieces of artwork over a period of five years. Themes of the artwork to include 1) What the Russian students love about their community and city. 2) What the students love about their country of Russia.
In return for their artwork the participating Russian schools will each receive $100,000 for a new school playground and support for their school art program. $50 million of the $100 million is allocated for this.
The project creates 1,025 new jobs in the Ottawa / Gatineau area for a period 6 years processing the Russian student artwork into 2,000 “Russian Kids Art Album eBooks”. English & Russian versions.
These jobs will likely be created in Gatineau Quebec in the Technology Park. There is a large empty business facility in the Gatineau Technology Park which used to be rented by Hewlett-Packard.
“Russian Kids Art Album eBooks” will be distributed throughout all Canadian public schools as a fun tool for Canadian students to learn more about Russia, Russian culture, Russian students and how they live.
Canadians would be very surprised at how similar Russian and Canadian cultures are. Priorities in both cultures is on family, family harmony, children, healthy communities, working hard, being honest, education, and especially the arts in schools. The only difference is language and alphabet which is easily surmounted with an electronic translator.
Why would Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Canadian Government be remotely interested in sponsoring an $87.7 to $100 million dollar art-playground project in Russia? For the simple purpose of improving Canadian-Russian relations. Russia represents a trillion dollar business opportunity to Canadian entrepreneurs and businesses. What Russia lacks Canadian businesses can offer in expertise and opportunity. And trust me it is in the trillions of dollars.
So it is of no surprise that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev would actively help out his friend Prime Minister Stephen Harper to send a couple of Russian bombers on a routine Canada flyby to facilitate a news story on the importance of Canada getting its new F-35 jet fighters. Even I agree with this. Russia knows from first hand experience at the onset of WWII what happens when you let your military preparedness slide. Russia almost lost their country to the Nazi regime, because they were not sufficiently prepared militarily.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper, President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are very good friends. Each leader clearly understands the importance of a strong military defense.
And this is why the Canadian government is actively seeking positive relations with Russia and the sponsorship of the Canadian-Russian Art-Playground Project that will create 1,025 new jobs in the Ottawa area for a period of 6 years.
It is all about positive international relations and new business opportunities for Canadians.

apart from that is it was it all fun / cool/ - shankInternational right11:48, 07/08/2010Its Russian Military's legitimate right to conduct military exercises in international waters. I dont think they are violating any territorial waters or any other convention. If the Canadian military chooses to intercept such missions over international airspace thats their own matter. US & NATO routinely conduct such exercises around the world without any objections from the world community.
