Russia signed a contract on Thursday with the Republic of South Africa on the delivery of enriched uranium.

Russia signed a contract on Thursday with the Republic of South Africa on the delivery of enriched uranium.

The 10-year-long contract was signed in Moscow during talks between the presidents of Russia and South Africa, Dmitry Medvedev and Jacob Zuma.

Russia is the largest supplier of services in the field of nuclear fuel to South Africa.

The head of the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, said Russia would deliver over 45% of the total volume of enriched uranium that South Africa needs for nuclear generation.

Medvedev said Russia and South Africa would develop a strategic partnership "in all directions."

"Russia has always held a special position towards the African continent," Medvedev said.

A number of other agreements are expected to be signed during the talks, including in the defense, space and hi-tech sectors.
