China and Ukraine can cooperate successfully in high technology and other sectors, a Chinese expert said on Thursday.
"Our countries have a very good potential for cooperation in the aerospace industry, aircraft manufacturing, and shipbuilding," Yang Chuang, professor at the Chinese Diplomatic Academy and former first secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Ukraine, told RIA Novosti.
He attributed the relatively low level of trade between Ukraine and China at present to the lack of large-scale Ukrainian-Chinese cooperation projects.
According to the Ukrainian National Institute of Strategic Studies, bilateral trade is currently at $9 billion a year.
"We are, therefore, unable to fully tap the potential that exists in our relations," Chuang said.
"I believe that with greater political trust between our two countries we could revisit the matter of setting up large-scale cooperation projects, thus significantly raising the volume of Chinese investment in Ukraine."
