Greek media reported on Monday that a bomb had exploded at the Russian Embassy in Athens, although the embassy has not yet confirmed the incident.

The details of the incident are unclear, with some media reports suggesting the bomb was detonated in the territory of the embassy, and others saying police intercepted a dispatch with explosives bound for the embassy and carried out a controlled blast.

Two Russian embassy spokesmen said they were not aware any explosion had taken place.

The latest potential attack joins a series of bomb scares at embassies in the Greek capital.

Another bomb was allegedly detonated in the Swiss embassy earlier on Tuesday and two parcel bombs, one addressed to the Dutch embassy and the other to the Mexican embassy, were discovered on Monday. One of them exploded in the hands of a female worker at a private delivery company.

Two men were arrested in connection with the attempt on the Dutch embassy. One is believed to have ties with a Greek far-left militant group.

Police have reportedly also intercepted dispatches packed with explosives intended for the Chilean and the Bulgarian embassies.

Mail bombs are becoming a common weapon among terrorists and militants around the world.

A recent attempt to send explosive-laden parcels from Yemen to synagogues in Chicago was linked to an al Qaeda cell.

Earlier this year a senior official at the Greek public order ministry was killed in a blast from a letter bomb addressed to the minister.
