The Ukrainian opposition disrupted a parliamentary session on Wednesday after a probe into alleged violations during the country's recent regional elections was not included in the session agenda, a senior opposition lawmaker said.

The opposition led by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said on Monday that the results of the regional polls, which took place in Ukraine on Sunday, were "totally distorted as a result of falsifications."

The opposition faction has demanded that the results of the elections to the two major regional governments, the Kiev and Lvov councils, are declared invalid and that a special commission to investigate the violations is established.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, one of the faction's leaders, Andriy Kozhemyakin, said the pro-presidential Party of Regions was afraid that it would not gain enough support in parliament to dismiss the opposition's demand for a probe.

The Ukrainian parliamentary majority dominated by Party of Regions members holds 265 seats in the 450-strong parliament, but Kozhemyakin said many of the pro-presidential lawmakers were likely to back the creation of the commission.

The Party of Regions gained some 36 percent of the vote in the regional polls, and the bloc of Tymoshenko came second with 10 percent, according to preliminary results.
